Outdoor Library in Gwanghwamun

This is an innovative library model operated by Seoul Metropolitan Library, and it includes the Outdoor Library in Seoul Plaza and the Outdoor Library in Seoul Plaza, Gwanghwamun and cheonggyecheon stream. As Seoul's representative library, The Seoul Metropolitan Library has been expanding this project to be the world's first and largest outdoor library, taking the lead in improving environmental awareness for sustainable development. This initiative began by creating an outdoor library in the plaza in front of the library so that users can communicate with nature and realize the value of the environment. This has designed a fun space where people can freely read books and enjoy cultural life outside the library, serving as a policy platform for various cooperation. The service has been innovatively expanded beyond the traditional library building concept to outdoor spaces, overcoming the limitations of indoor library services and is also known as the 'Buildingless Library.'

We facilitate a cultural oasis of literature stretching from Gwanghwamun Station to the Yukjo Square in front of Gyeongbokgung Palace. This book-centric cultural promenade is anchored by five pivotal spaces: the Gwanghwamun Lounge, Haechi Square, Play Yard, and Yukjo Square. Designed to enrich the daily lives of individuals seeking uniqueness—catering especially to Millenials and Generation Z-ers, those entering their golden years, tourists, and local professionals—it offers a sanctuary of happiness, enjoyment, and relaxation. Our curated selections and diverse programs celebrate a life well-lived, personal tastes, and moments of tranquility. Beyond the joy of reading in our open-air courtyards, we enhance the cultural fabric of the city with concerts and film screenings, creating a vibrant community hub for all to enjoy.

Everyone is encouraged to use the shared books cleanly.
Please organize read books back on the shelf or place them on the book cart (book truck).
To ensure availability for many users, please refrain from studying for extended periods.
※ If you leave your belongings unattended for more than 20 minutes, they may be collected as to free up the space for other users
No food is allowed, other than simple beverages.
Refrain from behaviors that could disturb others' reading (such as personal phone calls).
There are no trash cans in the lounge. Please take your trash back with you.
