Outdoor Library in Seoul Plaza | Seoul Metropolitan Library

This is an innovative library model operated by Seoul Metropolitan Library, and it includes the Outdoor Library in Seoul Plaza, Gwanghwamun and cheonggyecheon stream. As Seoul's representative library, The Seoul Metropolitan Library has been expanding this project to be the world's first and largest outdoor library, taking the lead in improving environmental awareness for sustainable development. This initiative began by creating an outdoor library in the plaza in front of the library so that users can communicate with nature and realize the value of the environment. This has designed a fun space where people can freely read books and enjoy cultural life outside the library, serving as a policy platform for various cooperation. The service has been innovatively expanded beyond the traditional library building concept to outdoor spaces, overcoming the limitations of indoor library services and is also known as the 'Buildingless Library.'

This is an open library where anyone visiting the Seoul Plaza can freely borrow and read books on various themes curated by the Seoul Metropolitan Library on the grass plaza. It provides a healing space in the heart of the city for nearby workers on weekdays and a space where parents to happily read books to their children on the weekends. Bean bags are available for people to lie down comfortably and read books or enjoy performances, supported by various auxiliary equipment and facilities. In addition, children's book curation and various children's programs are held every weekend to compensate for the absence of a children's collection in the Seoul Metropolitan Library.

Let's show what the 10 million Seoul citizens can do at the "Outdoor Library in Seoul Plaza," an open library operated by your participation.

Anyone can freely read the books provided.
Please use the book cleanly and return it to its original shelf after reading.
No food is allowed, other then light drinks and snacks.
Do not conduct any activities that may disrupt the use of the place by others.
Please treat the grass, facilities, and fixtures in the plaza with care.
No pets are allowed.
Please take your trash back with you.
Infants and toddlers must be accompanied by a guardian, and keep your personal belongings safe.
The bathroom is located on the B1F of the Citizens Hall.
